“I secretly went to our country house without telling my husband because I wanted to find out what he was doing there. When I opened the door, I was overcome with sheer horror.”
My husband, Mark, and I own a small country house in a village. We used to go there almost every weekend. We planted flowers, worked in the garden, grilled meat, and simply enjoyed a break from the city and its noise. But at some point, everything changed.
Mark started refusing to go there. Sometimes he claimed he had urgent work, sometimes he was tired, sometimes he had a headache, or he would simply say, “Maybe another time.” At first, I didn’t think much of it.
Until one day, our neighbor from the village called me.
“Listen,” she said casually, “I saw your husband near the house yesterday.”
At first, I didn’t even understand what she meant.
“You must be mistaken,” I replied. “He was at work all day.”
“No, I’m sure it was him. He came out of the house and spent a long time carrying things from his car,” she said calmly.
I hung up, and my stomach tightened. All kinds of unpleasant thoughts rushed into my head. Why had he been there without telling me? Why was he hiding these trips? And most importantly, what was he doing there?
The following weekend, Mark once again said he wasn’t going anywhere.
“Maybe I’ll go by myself then, get some fresh air,” I suggested carefully.
He immediately became tense.
“No,” he replied far too quickly. “I’d feel better if you stayed home.”
And at that moment, I understood everything. If there were nothing suspicious, he wouldn’t have objected.
When Mark left the house, I decided to follow him. He got into his car and headed toward the village. I waited a little while and drove after him. As I approached the house, my heart pounded. My hands were shaking. It felt as if I was about to discover something terrible, but I couldn’t stop.
I walked up to the door, took a deep breath, and stepped inside.
I secretly went to our country house without telling my husband because I wanted to find out what he was doing there. When I opened the door, I was overcome with sheer horror.
And in that moment, I realized I had been wrong to fear finding a mistress there…What I found was far worse…..

The house was filled with electronics. Brand-new televisions, laptops, tablets, cameras, and boxed tools. Bags were stacked in the corners, filled with jewelry, watches, chains, and earrings. Bundles of cash covered the tables and filled the drawers. There was so much money that my knees nearly gave way.
It didn’t look like a hobby, a business, or even simple hoarding. It looked like a warehouse.
I didn’t make a scene. Instead, I decided to confront my husband directly.
When Mark came back, I simply asked:
“Explain all of this to me.”
At first, he tried to joke about it. Then he claimed they were “temporary items” and that I didn’t understand. But when I told him I had seen everything with my own eyes, he fell silent.
Then he told me the truth.
It turned out that Mark had lost his job almost two years earlier. He had told no one. At first, he tried to find another job. Then he took out loans. When the money ran out, he made a choice that changed everything.
For the past two years, he had been burglarizing houses.
He selected empty properties, watched the owners, broke in at night, and stole anything valuable. Some items he sold immediately, while others he stored in our country house and sold gradually over time.
I looked at the man I had been living with and no longer recognized him. The house I believed was a safe place had become a storage room for stolen goods. And the man I trusted had been living a double life, risking his freedom every single day.
In that moment, I realized something.
I would have preferred to discover that he had a mistress.
Because the truth was far more terrifying.
