“Darling, your wife is back! You really didn’t tell her that I live here now? It’s okay, maybe she can stay in the kids’ room for now. Until the divorce.”

I heard this before I had even managed to close the door.

The elevator slowly climbed upward as I stared at my reflection in the mirror. Yes, I was no longer a young girl. But I was not the kind of woman who could simply be erased and replaced. The business trip had been exhausting, and all I dreamed of was a hot shower and hugging my daughter.

I quietly unlocked the two locks so I wouldn’t wake my husband. The hallway was dimly lit. And the first thing I saw was a pair of unfamiliar shoes. High heels, a bright color, an audacious design. Our nanny would never wear anything like that.

I was still trying to come up with a logical explanation when the bedroom door opened.

She walked out calmly, as though she owned the place. She was wearing my robe. In her hands was my cup. She looked me up and down and gave me a mocking smile.

If men usually chose younger and more glamorous women, my husband seemed to have gone in the opposite direction. She was older than me, noticeably heavier, with heavy makeup and a look full of self-confidence.

And yet, she was standing in my home.

“Well, I suppose we’ve met,” she said in a sugary voice. “He didn’t have time to warn you? We’re together now. I think it would be more convenient for you to stay in the kids’ room. Temporarily, of course. Until the divorce.”

At that moment, something inside me clicked.

Not pain. Not tears.

Coldness.

I walked past her into the kitchen and saw my husband. He was standing there as pale as a wall. No excuses. Not a single word. Just confusion.

She kept talking. About how her husband was tired of his “aging wife.” About their new life. About how it was time for me to step aside and give up my place.

She thought I would be ashamed. She had absolutely no idea what I was capable of.

I took out my phone. And then something happened that left both of them completely stunned …

“Hello. Good morning. There is a stranger inside my apartment. She has entered without permission. The address is…”

“Darling, your wife is back! Didn’t you tell her that I live here now?” I heard my husband’s mistress say as soon as I entered the house.

My husband immediately looked up.

“What are you doing?”

“Doing what I should have done a long time ago.”

While the mistress nervously paced around the kitchen, the officers arrived before she had even managed to come up with an excuse. I calmly showed them the documents proving ownership of the apartment. I had bought it before our marriage. Everything was registered in my name.

The officer formally ordered her to leave the premises.

Suddenly, she became a completely different person. Her voice trembled. Her confidence disappeared. Her heels no longer clicked so proudly against the floor.

My husband tried to intervene, but the officer coldly reminded him that unauthorized people had no right to remain there without the owner’s consent.

When the door closed behind her, I looked at my husband.

He stood in the middle of the kitchen, both confused and angry.

“If you want, you can temporarily stay in the kids’ room,” I said calmly. “But remember one thing: I will make sure you lose everything.”

He gave me an ironic smile.

“Are you serious?”

“Darling, your wife is back! Didn’t you tell her that I live here now?” I heard his mistress say again.

“Absolutely. You replaced me with a woman who is only good enough to be a nanny. If she were younger and prettier, I might have thought the problem was me. But now I see that the problem is simply your taste.”

For the first time that morning, he didn’t know what to say.
