Shortly before she died, my mother-in-law took my hand and whispered, “Go to the village and dig under the potato box in the cellar.” After the funeral, I went there, and when I saw what was hidden in the ground, I was horrified

Late in the fall, my husband brought his mother to our home. She could barely walk or speak. The doctors immediately said she had terminal cancer and did not have long to live. That same evening, my husband announced that he was leaving for a long overseas business trip

that would last almost a year.

He helped his mother lie down on the couch, kissed her on the forehead, and turned to me. He said it was a good opportunity to earn money and that I could handle everything. Two days later, he left.

From that moment on, all the responsibility fell on my shoulders. I was alone with a seriously ill person. I woke up before dawn because my mother-in-law could hardly rest peacefully. I washed her, changed her clothes, fed her with a spoon, and made sure she took her medicine. At night, I barely slept because the pain returned every few hours.

My husband sent money irregularly, and it was barely enough for medication. I paid for everything else myself. Over time, my savings disappeared, and I had to borrow money because I could not leave a sick person without help.

By winter, my mother-in-law had become extremely weak. One snowy night, when the apartment was unusually quiet, she called me closer. She suddenly squeezed my hand tightly and whispered that after her death, I absolutely had to go to the village. She told me to go to the summer kitchen and dig under the potato box. She explained nothing more.

A few days later, she passed away.

After the funeral, I hesitated for a long time before going, but her words would not leave my mind. Finally, I gathered my courage and went to the village.

Everything in the old kitchen looked exactly the same. I moved the potato box aside, took a shovel, and started digging. About half a meter down, the shovel hit something hard. I dropped to my knees and continued digging with my hands. A chill ran down my spine when I realized my mother-in-law had hidden it there for more than thirty years.

Buried in the ground was an old metal box. It was heavy and covered in rust. I struggled to open the lid and immediately saw stacks of money neatly bundled together. Beside them were documents and an envelope with my name on it.

I sat down on the ground and could not move for a long time. In my hands was more money than I had ever seen in my life. I instantly understood that she had been saving it for years and had told no one about it.

Inside the envelope was a letter. My mother-in-law wrote that she had been saving that money for more than thirty years. She knew her son only thought about himself and would abandon her when things became difficult. She asked me not to give him anything and not to feel guilty about it.

She wrote that she had seen how I cared for her, how I stayed awake all night, and how I spent my last penny on medicine. She thanked me for not abandoning her when everyone else did.

At the end of the letter, there was one final sentence. She asked me to start a new life and never again feel the need to prove myself to anyone.
