Angela had seen many strange guests over the years. It seemed nothing could surprise her anymore. That was until she noticed the little girl.
It all started on Tuesday evening. Around 8:00 PM, a man of about forty entered the motel. Beside him was a girl of about eleven — thin, blonde, with a black backpack. At first glance, they looked like father and daughter.
The girl didn’t say a word. She just stared at the floor. The man signed the register and requested a room for one night. He asked not to enter for cleaning and… not to draw the curtains.
The next night, it repeated: the same man, the same girl. By the third night, Angela felt a worry that didn’t leave her even when she went home. The girl looked increasingly depressed, and the man more irritated. He was gripping her shoulder too tightly.
On the sixth night, she decided to act: exiting through the back, she walked around the building and looked into room 112’s window. The curtain was not fully closed. Through the narrow gap, only silhouettes were visible… but that was enough to make her knees buckle.

She saw the silhouette of the man leaning over the girl. The girl sat on the bed, her shoulders trembling. Angela stepped back, heart racing. Everything looked… wrong.
The next morning, at 10:19, something happened that confirmed her suspicions: the girl walked next to the man, clutching her backpack so tightly her fingers turned white. Her face was pale, eyes guilty or scared. She wasn’t smiling — and neither was he.
As they passed the utility room, Angela peeked. For the first time, she noticed the girl barely standing on her feet, as if feeling unwell. The man held her arm, but it didn’t look like care.
Angela couldn’t take it anymore. For the first time in many years, she broke motel rules and quietly knocked on their room door when the man went out to the car.
And that’s when Angela saw something shocking…
The girl opened the door herself.
— Sweetie… are you okay? — Angela asked.
— I just… need to lie down, — she whispered. — My head is spinning again.
— Is he… a good person? Does he hurt you? — the maid asked cautiously.
The girl looked up in surprise.
— That’s my dad, — she said. — And he helps me… I’m sick.
As if fearing Angela wouldn’t believe her, the girl unzipped her backpack. Inside were medical containers, bags, documents.
— We come here every month, — the girl explained, — because there’s a doctor here who does my dialysis. It takes a long time… and afterwards I’m always weak.
Angela was stunned.
At that moment, the man returned. He saw the open backpack, Angela’s look, the pale girl — and understood everything.
— She was just worried, — the girl said before he could ask. — She thought you were angry.
The man smiled tiredly, sadly, without resentment.
— I would worry too, — he said. — She’s been so weak lately… Sometimes I’m afraid for her too.
Angela froze: it was the same “medications” she had seen through the window yesterday. Everything suddenly made sense and looked completely different.
