Lyudmila always said that her home was her territory. A place where everything had to be exactly the way she wanted it. Where spices belonged in the right jars, knives were never allowed to become dull, and no one scrubbed her pots with a metal scouring pad.

Her husband, Sergey, was a kind man, but he was far too soft whenever it came to his mother, Valentina Ivanovna.

— She just wants to help, Sergey would repeat every time Lyudmila discovered that jars had been moved or food had been thrown away.

Her version of “help” was rather strange.

Soy sauce and truffle paste would disappear from the refrigerator because they “smelled suspicious.” A brand-new frying pan would end up covered in scratches. Once, an expensive enamel pot even ended up with a black stain on the bottom.

Valentina Ivanovna lived in the next neighborhood and had a spare key “just in case.”

This happened often, and always when the homeowners were away.

She would open cabinets, go through shelves, and then announce with a satisfied expression in the evening:

— I tidied things up for you. I threw out the old stuff. I made some soup.

Lyudmila would press her lips together and remain silent, while Sergey would only awkwardly ask his mother to be more careful.

The breaking point came on Sergey’s birthday.

Lyudmila had prepared a romantic dinner. She bought seafood and a good bottle of wine, hoping to spend the evening alone with her husband.

When she returned home earlier than usual, she found a full-blown gathering in the kitchen.

Valentina Ivanovna and several of her friends were sitting around the table.

The very same shrimp were spread across the plates, and the empty bottle of wine stood in the middle of the table.

— We decided to surprise you! her mother-in-law said cheerfully. — I fried your little seafood things with mayonnaise. It’s more filling that way.

Lyudmila silently stared at the empty plates and realized that her patience had finally run out.

And she did something after which her mother-in-law didn’t just stop touching her belongings — she became so afraid of coming to their home that she wouldn’t even step inside without permission…..

My mother-in-law was constantly touching my food and rearranging things in my home, while my husband always took her side. Then I came up with an idea that would finally put this pushy woman in her place once and for all.

The next day, Lyudmila calmly announced that she was leaving on a three-day business trip. Sergey would be working his shift. Her mother-in-law could come over and “take care of things” as much as she wanted.

She left a jar labeled “detox jam” and a small bottle of syrup in the cupboard.

Valentina Ivanovna had always believed in folk remedies and “detoxes.” A note explained that the product was beneficial, but that it was important to follow the recommended dosage.

Lyudmila knew that no one would follow the dosage.

When she returned, Sergey greeted her with a confused expression.

— Something strange happened to Mom, he said quietly.

Valentina Ivanovna had decided to complete the entire “course” in a single day. She ate almost the entire jar and washed it down with a double dose of syrup.

The result was far too intense.

My mother-in-law was constantly touching my food and rearranging things in my home, while my husband always took her side. That’s when I came up with an idea that would finally put this pushy woman in her place once and for all.

One of the ingredients also turned her tongue bright blue. When Valentina Ivanovna saw herself in the mirror, she became so frightened that she called her husband, Ivan Petrovich, and demanded that he come immediately.

Once it became clear that it was merely a reaction to taking too much of the product, her fear turned into outrage.

— Lyudmila tried to poison me! she protested angrily.

— There were instructions on the jar, Lyudmila replied calmly. — And it was kept inside a closed cupboard. I never asked anyone to try it.

Ivan Petrovich silently looked at his wife. He knew perfectly well about her habit of opening other people’s cupboards.

That same evening, the spare key was returned to Lyudmila.

After that, Valentina Ivanovna never came over without asking first. The refrigerator remained untouched, and the dishes stayed intact.

My mother-in-law was constantly touching my food and rearranging things in my home, while my husband always took her side. Then I came up with an idea that would finally put this pushy woman in her place once and for all.

And peace finally returned to Lyudmila’s home.
