The party on the roof of the office building began calmly and even somewhat ceremoniously. Employees of a large company had gathered to congratulate their new CEO.

No one said it out loud, but everyone knew that just a year ago, this woman had been nothing more than the wife of the company’s owner. Now, she had become the head of a huge organization.

Her husband had died unexpectedly. An accident had taken his life in a single evening, and no one could immediately believe that it had really happened.

He had left no will because he was still young and had never thought about death. Under the law, all his property, bank accounts, and the company itself passed to his legal wife.

They had no children, so she became the sole heir and the only person with the right to manage the business.

The news was a devastating blow to his mother. The mother-in-law was convinced that her son would always have taken care of her and would never have left her without a share of his wealth.

But the law was on the daughter-in-law’s side.

At first, the older woman tried to speak calmly, but then arguments, accusations, and endless reproaches began. The mother-in-law increasingly claimed that her daughter-in-law had taken away everything that belonged to their family.

The final straw was the office party. The employees decided to celebrate the appointment of their new director and invited almost everyone connected with the company.

One of the employees decided to invite the mother-in-law as well, thinking it would be the right thing to do.

The woman arrived dressed in a black suit and barely spoke to any of the guests. She stood near the window, watching the people around her and occasionally casting cold looks at her daughter-in-law.

When the music grew quieter and some of the guests went out onto the roof of the skyscraper, the daughter-in-law approached the glass railing to look at the city in the evening.

Her mother-in-law walked up behind her.

For a few seconds, they stood in silence. Then the older woman quietly said:

— Everything was supposed to belong to our family.

The daughter-in-law simply turned around to answer her, but at that moment, her mother-in-law suddenly pushed her.

Her yellow dress flew into the air, and the young woman lost her balance.

The mother-in-law was convinced that if her daughter-in-law were gone, the entire inheritance would eventually pass to her as the only relative of the deceased company owner.

But she had no idea what would happen just a few minutes later. ….

A few seconds later, screams rang out across the rooftop. The building’s security guards were already running toward the edge. The daughter-in-law had not fallen all the way down.

During the fall, she instinctively grabbed hold of a metal structure belonging to a maintenance platform located several meters below the roof. Her hands slipped against the cold metal, the wind tore at her dress, and her legs dangled over the enormous drop.

Several employees saw her and began screaming for help.

The security guards and two men quickly climbed down a maintenance ladder and, within a minute, managed to reach her and pull her onto the platform.

The young woman was trembling. Her hands were bleeding from the cuts, but she was alive. Within minutes, police officers and paramedics were already standing on the roof.

As the daughter-in-law was being taken to the hospital, she briefly opened her eyes and quietly said to a police officer:

— Please… don’t let her go.

At that moment, the mother-in-law finally realized that her plan had failed—and that a completely different life was waiting for her.
