A woman left a few coins for an elderly lady every day, but one day, as she bent down to drop a coin, the old woman grabbed her hand: “You’ve done so much good for me… don’t go home today” .
After a difficult divorce, 35-year-old Susanna, with a tired yet determined look, started a new job and walked the same route every morning — from her apartment building to the метро.
At the beginning of the street, near a pharmacy kiosk, a thin gray-haired old woman had been sitting for over two months. She had a worn-out mat and a cup in front of her. Susanna never passed by without giving something — sometimes coins, sometimes even a bill if she had just been paid.
The old woman would always nod quietly, as if expressing a gratitude that didn’t need words. Day after day, it became a привычка — almost a morning ritual.
That morning started the same way. A light drizzle fell, the pavement glistened, and people rushed past without looking around. Susanna reached into her pocket, grabbed some coins, bent down — but before she could drop them, the old woman suddenly grabbed her wrist.
Her fingers were thin and bony, yet strong. Susanna looked up — the old woman’s gaze was no longer calm, but filled with тревога and fear.
“Listen carefully, dear,” she whispered. “You’ve helped me so many times… now let me do something for you. Don’t go home today. Under no circumstances. Stay anywhere — with a friend, in a hotel, even in the metro… just don’t return to your apartment. Promise me.”
Shocked, Susanna slowly walked away, but all the way to the metro she felt growing anxiety.
At work, she couldn’t focus. Everything seemed strange — a coworker asking odd questions, documents going missing. With each hour, the unease inside her grew stronger.
That evening, instead of going home, she booked a bed in a hostel and stayed there.
The next morning, she came back to the old woman earlier than usual. The woman looked at her as if she had been waiting. What she said next made Susanna’s hair stand on end

That very night, Susanna’s apartment burned down completely. Firefighters said the door had been broken, and the fire had started in several places.
The old woman then revealed that she had overheard two men following Susanna the evening before, discussing how they would “finish her that night” and “take the apartment quietly.”
Later, it turned out those men were her ex-husband and his friend, who planned to get rid of her for the apartment.
Only thanks to the old woman — her awareness and courage — Susanna survived.
